Did you know that, by programming electronic tills to suppress sales recordings, you are committing tax evasion? This can lead to serious penalties imposed by HMRC, risking the future of your retail business.

To reduce electronic sales suppression (ESS), HMRC is pinpointing the producers and promoters of the electronic till software that allows this. Once they find a software distributor of ESS software, they will use their details to track down all retailers that have purchased from them.

If you are found to be using ESS-enabling software, HMRC will send you a notice to remove the software from your tills; you will have 30 days to action this. Ignoring this will likely lead to a penalty of up to £50,000.

It is easy to avoid these high penalties. Simply take extra care when you are both purchasing and upgrading your till software. Always check your software suppliers’ credentials to ensure that you are buying an authentic product.
